About Me

Merve Unuvar

I am the Director of Agentic Middleware and Applications at IBM Research AI, where I lead strategic research and engineering efforts at the intersection of artificial intelligence, automation, and enterprise-ready agent technologies. In this role, I drive the development of foundational platforms and tooling that enable robust, scalable AI systems for business automation and intelligent workflows.

I am currently spearheading CUGA (Configurable Generalist Agent), an open-source, enterprise-oriented generalist agent framework designed to execute complex, multi-step workflows across web interfaces, APIs, and integrations. CUGA aims to dramatically streamline agent development by providing a configurable core that balances reliability, recovery, and structured reasoning, and is now publicly available for experimentation and community feedback.

Complementing this, I am actively involved in advancing the Agent Lifecycle Toolkit (ALTK) — an open-source suite of modular components that enhance agent robustness, tool execution accuracy, guardrail enforcement, and lifecycle performance. ALTK supports developers in building reliable agent pipelines that can be integrated into a wide range of real-world applications.

Prior to my current leadership in agentic middleware, I directed the AI Platforms and Automation team, collaborating with product and business units to integrate AI across IBM’s Cloud Paks and automation offerings. My earlier contributions include strategic AI platform initiatives, foundational work in blockchain solutions, and roles spanning research, cloud architecture, and data science.

I hold a PhD in Operations Research and serve as an Adjunct Professor at Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, as well as a board member at the Stevens Institute of Technology School of Systems and Enterprises.
